Field tripping in the Torres Strait

Environmental Project Manager Sabrina Newton and Principal – Environmental Management Callum Gawne travelled to the Torres Strait recently to carry out preliminary inspections in support of future environmental approvals for a potential minerals project.

The visit focused on developing an environmental understanding of the island and assessing key site conditions that will guide future approvals work.

Sabrina and Callum inspected areas of historical disturbance, natural vegetation, and potential disturbance areas to capture early observations on environmental sensitivities, landform constraints, and opportunities for minimising environmental impact.

Walking across areas of rehabilitation and natural vegetation reinforced the importance of embedding environmental consultation early in project planning.

The island’s unique island ecosystems, cultural values, and surrounding marine environment highlight the need for thoughtful planning and meaningful stakeholder engagement as the project progresses.

A sincere thank you goes to the onsite team and local community for facilitating the field tour and sharing detailed updates on current priorities. Their knowledge and openness contributed greatly to the success of the visit.

Onward is committed to supporting projects that balance development with respect for culture and environment.

Field trips like this ensure environmental considerations are integrated from the very beginning, and demonstrate a commitment to long-term sustainability and project success.
